THE CAR THAT WAS
MADE TO RUN
Designed by Harry C.
Stutz
Sold by John North
Willys
1911 Marion Bobcat
This is one of
the most famous cars
in the world. This
car was built in
1911 and was
personally designed
and tested by Harry
Stutz when he worked
as chief engineer
for the Marion Motor
Car Company in
Indianapolis,
Indiana.
This car was
built to run. It was
a racer and still
runs today at age
94. This is one of
the most unique
pieces of American
automotive history
we have ever had the
thrill to auction.
Just the history of
this car is enough
to write a motion
picture about. This
car when it was
originally
manufactured was
viewed by names such
as Harry Stutz
(designer) John
Willys (sales) and
Fred Duisenberg
(designer/racer).
The Marion
Bobcat was a racer
and was built to
run. In it’s early
life this car was
shipped to Brisbane,
Australia for the
racing circuit.
During an exciting
race the car was
damaged and was put
aside for years
until an American
collector brought it
back to America to a
new home in
Oregon. It was
later moved to
Pennsylvania, and
finally upstate New
York. Over that
time each owner
continued the
restoration and
piece by piece found
the period parts to
rebuild this
legend.
The last and
current owner
purchased it 26
years ago and worked
over that time to
rebuild and finish
the restoration by
1998. Today it
represents 94 years
of working
preservation. It
starts right up
(after hand
cranking) and then
races down the road
like the day it was
built.
It features a
transaxle rear-end,
non-skid tires,
right-hand drive,
outside shifter, and
the famous monocle
windshield.
True to the
period when racing
cars were built in
home shops by the
best parts from
several different
manufacturers, this
vehicle does feature
parts from other
1911 vehicles. This
is how racers were
built in 1911, and
this car did indeed
see many a victory
on the track. Based
on the M30 model,
with serial number
10-8118, it features
a 4 cylinder engine
with a wheelbase of
108 inches.
This is a car
for the true
collector. There
are fewer than 9
Marions in road
running condition.
This 1911 is a gem
indeed.
It has been in
the care of a
serious Pre-WWI car
collector/restorer
for the past 26
years. We would
like to see it go to
the next deserving
custodian so that
100 years from now,
it will still be
racing.
Please check
this listing as new
information will be
being added over the
duration of the
auction, thank you ,
VVG.
